The Declaration of Independence is important because it states that a government exists for the benefit of the people and that "all men are created equal."

The Declaration of Independence is the usual name of a statement adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, which announced that the thirteen American colonies,[2] then at war with Great Britain, regarded themselves as thirteen newly independent sovereign states, and no longer a part of the British Empire. Instead they formed a new nation—the United States of America.

its important because the americans wanted independance from the britsh and have there own sovereign nation and rules. the americans had been at war with the british for the previous twelve months prior to the declaration. this sent out a clear signal of intent to the british.
